General estimate, not veterinary advice

This is a general starting estimate, not a substitute for veterinary guidance. Your pet's real needs depend on their health, body condition and individual metabolism. Confirm the amount with your veterinarian.

MER factors follow standard veterinary-nutrition guidance (WSAVA global nutrition guidelines; Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center calorie framework). RER = 70 Γ— (body weight in kg)^0.75.

The math behind the numbers

Every estimate starts from the resting energy requirement (the calories a pet burns at rest), calculated as 70 Γ— (body weight in kg)0.75. That's multiplied by a factor for life stage and activity (a growing puppy needs far more per pound than a senior; an intact, working dog more than a neutered couch companion). The result is the maintenance energy requirement in calories, which we divide by your food's calories-per-cup to get a daily cup amount.

Frequently asked questions

How are daily calories calculated?

We use the resting energy requirement (RER = 70 Γ— weight in kg^0.75) multiplied by a life-stage/activity factor to get the maintenance energy requirement (MER), then divide by your food's calories per cup.

Why does the cup amount matter which food I use?

Foods vary a lot in energy density, from about 320 to 500 kcal per cup. Always use the exact kcal/cup on your bag for the closest estimate.

Is this veterinary advice?

No. It's a general starting estimate. Body condition, health and metabolism vary; confirm the amount with your veterinarian.
