How dog age really works
The "multiply by seven" rule is a myth. Dogs mature quickly: roughly 15 human years in their first year and about 24 by their second, and then the rate of aging depends on size. Toy and small breeds age slowly and often live into their mid-teens; large and giant breeds age faster and have shorter lifespans, which is why this calculator adjusts the curve by size class rather than using one flat multiplier.

Frequently asked questions
Is the ×7 rule accurate?
No. Dogs age fast in their first two years (about 15 human years in year one, 24 by year two), then the pace depends on size: small dogs age slowly and live longer, while giant breeds age faster. We use that size-adjusted method.
What if my dog is a mix?
Pick the closest size class (toy, small, medium, large or giant) based on adult weight; that's what drives the aging curve.
Do you have a cat version?
Yes. Use the Cat Age Calculator for the feline aging curve.
