How cat age really works
Cats grow up fast, then age gently. A kitten reaches roughly 15 human years by its first birthday and about 24 by its second, because those first two years pack in the equivalent of early childhood through young adulthood. After that the pace settles to about four human years for every calendar year. That front-loaded curve is why the flat "multiply by seven" rule is so far off, especially for kittens and senior cats.

Frequently asked questions
How is a cat's age calculated?
Cats reach roughly 15 human years by age one and 24 by age two, then add about 4 human years per calendar year after that.
Is the ×7 rule right for cats?
No. The ×7 rule badly overstates a young cat's age and understates a senior cat's. The feline curve is front-loaded in the first two years, then steady.
Do you have a dog version?
Yes. Use the Dog Age Calculator, which adjusts the curve by breed size.
