Aquarium Weight Statistics: Full Weight and Floor Load for 29 Tanks

A full glass aquarium weighs a median 11.3 lb per gallon and puts about 108 lb on each square foot of floor. Manufacturer data for 29 tanks, with the math, a chart and a CSV.

By the PawReckon team Β· Published

A full glass aquarium weighs a median of 11.3 lb per gallon, and puts a median 108 lb on every square foot of floor it stands on. Those are the manufacturer's own figures for 29 Aqueon aquariums from 1 to 210 gallons, divided by their outside footprint. 26 of the 29 weigh more than the 10 lb per gallon rule of thumb, and 27 of 29 exceed the 40 psf live load a US living room floor is designed for. The four largest (90, 125, 150, 210 gallon) each weigh a thousand pounds or more.

This page collects every number in one place so it can be checked and cited: the published weights, the per-gallon and per-square-foot figures computed from them, 290 gravel and saltwater scenarios, a chart, and two CSV files. Every figure states its n and where it came from. Data as of 2026-10-24.

Key findings

  • Full weight per gallon: median 11.3 lb (n = 29), middle half 11.0 to 11.5 lb, range 9.1 (60 Breeder) to 12.0 (54 Corner). Water alone is 8.34.
  • The 10 lb per gallon rule runs low for 26 of 29 models. Use 11.5 to 12 lb per gallon when sizing a stand.
  • Floor load: median 108 psf over the tank footprint (n = 29). 27 of 29 are above 40 psf, 16 are above 100 psf, and the 210 gallon tops the list at 199 psf.
  • Glass is a small share: the empty tank is a median 12.3% of the full weight (n = 29). Water is most of the load at every size.
  • Aqueon's full weights include an allowance beyond glass and water: a median 50 lb, equal to about 1.9 inches of gravel across the footprint (n = 29). 3 models (60 Breeder, Mini Bow 1, Mini Bow 2.5) list a full weight that is glass plus water and nothing more.
  • Nominal gallons fill a median 91.8% of the outside box on the 22 rectangular models; the rest is glass, trim and the gap under the rim. The 15 Column is the least efficient at 74.0%.

Floor load by tank, chart

Bar chart of floor load in pounds per square foot for 29 Aqueon aquariums, from 29 psf for the Mini Bow 1 to 199 psf for the 210, against a 40 psf residential design load line.

The chart sorts tanks by gallons, and the bars do not climb in a straight line. Height drives floor load, not volume: the 45 gallon (162 psf) presses harder than the 75 (126 psf), because it stacks 23.75 inches of water on a footprint only 12.625 inches deep. The breeder tanks, built wide and shallow for raising fry, are the gentlest on a floor for their size: the 40 Breeder reads 100 psf and the 60 Breeder 87.

The full table, 29 aquariums

Model, dimensions, empty and full weight are exactly as Aqueon prints them. The last three columns are computed: full weight divided by nominal gallons, full weight divided by the footprint in square feet, and that load as a multiple of the 40 psf living-area design load.

Gravel depth and saltwater change the total less than you think

The published full weights are a single number per tank. To show how much the setup moves it, the second CSV recomputes each tank 10 ways: fresh and salt water, and 0 to 4 inches of gravel at 100 lb per cubic foot, using the same weight function as the aquarium volume calculator and the fish tank weight chart. Saltwater at a specific gravity of 1.025 adds only 11 lb to a 55 gallon. Each inch of gravel adds 36 lb to the same tank, so the two biggest variables an owner controls are the substrate and the rock, not the salt.

The scenario totals count water at nominal gallons plus the stated gravel, so they sit close to Aqueon's own full figures: the median gap between a 2 inch gravel estimate and the published full weight is 5.7%, and 23 of 29 models land within 10%. The large misses are the smallest tanks, where a 2 inch bed is more gravel than anyone puts in a 1 gallon bowfront, and the 60 Breeder, whose published full weight allows for no substrate at all.

What the floor numbers mean, and what they do not

US homes built to the International Residential Code are designed for a uniformly distributed live load of 40 lb per square foot in living areas and 30 in sleeping rooms (IRC Table R301.5). A full 55 gallon at 146 psf is 3.7 times that, and a 125 at 150 psf is 3.8 times. That comparison is the one people find in forum threads, and it overstates the danger, because the design load applies to the whole room while a tank is a concentrated load that the subfloor spreads and neighbouring joists share. Plenty of 55 and 75 gallon tanks sit on ordinary upstairs floors.

What the psf figure is good for is comparison. Two tanks with the same gallons can differ a lot: the 20 High and 20 Long weigh the same 225 lb, and the high puts 107 psf on the floor against the long's 86. For scale, a full 75 gallon at 785 lb weighs as much as 4 average American men (199.8 lb, CDC) standing on a patch of floor 6.2 square feet in size. A 210 gallon is 12 of them.

The practical rules do not change with the numbers: run the long side of the tank across the joists, put it near a load-bearing or exterior wall rather than mid-span, and above roughly 125 gallons, or on any floor that already bounces, ask a builder or structural engineer before filling it. The weight guide covers stands and floors in more depth.

Methodology

Source. The model list, dimensions, empty weights and full weights come from Aqueon's "Critical dimensions for all aquariums" chart (PDF, dated 2023-04-24), which lists 30 glass aquariums. Aqueon measures length, width and height over the outside of the tank including the trim. The chart does not print a weight unit; the values are treated as pounds, which matches Aqueon's US retail listings (the 55 gallon at 78 lb, for example).

Exclusion. 8 Hexagon is excluded (n = 29 of 30). Its printed weights, 2.6 lb empty and 27 lb full, are identical to the 2Β½ Mini on the same chart and are lighter than 8 gallons of water alone (66.7 lb), so they are a misprint. The 60 Breeder is kept but flagged: at 43 lb empty it is listed lighter than the smaller 40 Breeder (58 lb), and its full weight is exactly glass plus water.

Computed columns. Water is 8.34 lb per US gallon. Lb per gallon is the published full weight over the nominal gallons in the model name. Footprint is outside length Γ— width; for the bowfront and corner models that is the bounding rectangle, so their psf is a slight underestimate. The implied allowance is full minus empty minus nominal water, and the equivalent gravel depth spreads it over the footprint at 100 lb per cubic foot. Saltwater uses a specific gravity of 1.025. The design loads are IRC Table R301.5; the average man is the CDC's NHANES 2015 to 2018 figure.

What was not measured. No tank was weighed for this page. Other brands differ: rimless, low-iron and thick-glass tanks run heavier, acrylic lighter. The stand, lid, lights, rock, sump and equipment are not included, and live rock can add a pound or more per gallon on a reef. Real water volume is lower than nominal once substrate and decor are in. The floor load is arithmetic over the footprint, not a structural assessment of any floor.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a full fish tank weigh per gallon?

About 11.3 lb per nominal gallon. That is the median of 29 Aqueon glass aquariums, using the manufacturer's own full weights; the middle half of models sit between 11.0 and 11.5 lb per gallon. Water alone is 8.34 lb per gallon, and the rest is glass and the substrate and decor the full figure allows for.

Is the 10 pounds per gallon rule accurate for aquariums?

It runs low. 26 of the 29 models weigh more than 10 lb per gallon when full by Aqueon's figures, so the rule underestimates a typical tank by about 13%. For a stand or floor, use 11.5 to 12 lb per gallon.

How much does a 55 gallon fish tank weigh full?

Aqueon lists its 55 gallon at 78 lb empty and 625 lb full. On its 48 1/4 Γ— 12 3/4 Γ— 21 inch footprint that is 146 lb per square foot. In saltwater with the same substrate allowance it comes to about 636 lb.

How much weight per square foot does a fish tank put on the floor?

The median across 29 models is 108 psf over the tank's own footprint, from 29 psf (Mini Bow 1) to 199 psf (210). 27 of 29 exceed the 40 psf live load a US living room is designed for, which is why the orientation and position of a big tank matter more than its gallons.

Can I use this data in my article or video?

Yes. The tables, CSV files and chart are licensed CC BY 4.0: use them with a credit to PawReckon and a link to this page. The underlying size and weight figures are Aqueon's, so credit the chart to Aqueon too.

Is a tall tank harder on the floor than a long one?

Yes, for the same gallons. The 20 High and 20 Long both weigh 225 lb full, but the high puts 107 psf on its footprint and the long 86 psf. Every extra inch of height is weight added over the same square feet.
