How Much Should I Feed My Dog? A Portion Guide That Uses Real Vet Math
The RER/MER method vets use, translated into daily calories and cups.
"How much should I feed my dog?" has a real answer, and it is not the range on the back of the bag. Veterinary nutritionists size a portion from energy needs: how many calories the dog burns in a day, then how many cups of a given food supply that many calories. Here is the same method, in plain English.

Method: resting energy requirement (RER) and maintenance energy requirement (MER) factors, standard veterinary-nutrition math (WSAVA global nutrition guidelines; NRC energy recommendations).
Step 1: resting energy requirement (RER)
RER is what your dog burns at rest. The standard formula is RER = 70 x (body weight in kg)^0.75. So a 20 kg (44 lb) dog has an RER of about 70 x 20^0.75, which is roughly 660 calories per day. You do not have to do the exponent by hand; our food calculator runs it for you.
Step 2: maintenance energy requirement (MER)
A dog does more than rest, so multiply RER by a life-stage and activity factor to get MER, the real daily target.

Our neutered 20 kg adult at a factor of 1.6 lands around 1,050 calories per day. A growing puppy of the same weight, at 2.0, would need closer to 1,320.

Step 3: turn calories into cups
Find the calories per cup on your food's label (it is usually listed as kcal/cup) and divide the daily calorie target by it. If our example food is 350 kcal per cup, then 1,050 / 350 is about 3 cups per day, split across meals. Different foods vary widely, which is why cups only make sense once you know calories.
Step 4: adjust to the dog in front of you
The formula gives a starting point, not a verdict. Check body condition every few weeks: ribs easy to feel, a visible waist from above, a belly tuck from the side. Adjust the portion by about 10 percent and reassess. Puppies, seniors, pregnant or nursing dogs, and dogs with medical conditions have different needs, so confirm the plan with your veterinarian.
