Why the "×7 Dog Years" Rule Is Wrong (and What Vets Actually Use)
The multiply-by-seven rule is a myth. Here is what really drives a dog's age.
Almost everyone has heard it: one dog year equals seven human years. It is simple, it is memorable, and it is wrong for nearly every dog. The real relationship between dog age and human age is not a flat multiplier at all. It is a curve, and the shape of that curve depends on how big your dog is.
Where the ×7 rule came from
The rule was never veterinary science. The most common explanation is a rough bit of mid-century arithmetic: if people lived to about 70 and dogs to about 10, then a dog year must be worth about seven human years. It was a convenient way to make a point, not a formula anyone measured. The problem is that it flattens two very different phases of a dog's life into one number.
How dogs actually age
Dogs do most of their aging early. A one-year-old dog is not a seven-year-old child. It is closer to a teenager, already near adult size and able to reproduce. By age two most dogs are the equivalent of a young adult in their twenties. After that the clock slows down, and this is where size takes over. Larger dogs mature later, age faster once they do, and live shorter lives on average.
This front-loaded shape is also what the research points to. Work published in 2020 comparing DNA methylation patterns (an "epigenetic clock") in dogs and humans found that the mapping between the two species is logarithmic rather than linear: steep early, then flattening. That is precisely the shape a single multiplier cannot produce, whatever number you pick for it.
The curve this calculator actually uses
Rather than one multiplier, our dog age calculator runs a two-phase, size-adjusted curve. It is deliberately simple enough to check by hand:
- Year one: about 15 human years, the same for every size class.
- Year two: another 9 human years, reaching roughly 24 by the second birthday, again the same for every size.
- Every year after that: a fixed number of human years set by the dog's size class, listed below.

So a 6-year-old Labrador (a large breed) is 24 for the first two years plus four more years at 6 each, which is 48 in human years. A 6-year-old Chihuahua, on the same two-phase logic but at 4 per year, comes out at 40. The ×7 rule calls them both 42.

Read the table left to right and the myth falls apart twice over. At ages one and two the columns are nearly identical, because every dog races through puppyhood and adolescence, and ×7 badly understates them: a one-year-old dog is not seven. By age ten the columns have pulled apart to 56 for a toy breed against 84 for a giant one, and the single number 70 sits uselessly between them. That is the whole problem: ×7 understates young dogs and misjudges older ones in opposite directions depending on size.

What vets use instead
Clinically, the useful question is not "what is my dog in human years" but "what life stage is my dog in", because that is what drives screening, diet and exercise decisions. Modern veterinary life-stage guidance is explicitly size-aware: a giant breed is treated as a senior years earlier than a toy breed of the same chronological age. Our curve is a plain-language version of that same idea, which is why it splits the fast growth phase from a size-specific adult rate instead of averaging both into one multiplier.

What the curve does not claim to know
Being honest about the limits is part of the point. A size-class curve is a population estimate, not a health assessment. It does not know your individual dog's body condition, dental health, joint status or genetics, and two dogs of the same breed and age can be in very different shape. Treat the number as a way to understand where your dog sits in their life span, not as a diagnosis. Your vet's physical exam is the thing that actually tells you how your dog is aging.
Cats get a different curve
