How Many Fish in a 10 Gallon Tank? Real Numbers by Species
About 9 neon tetras, 18 ember tetras or 7 guppies on their own, or a betta with a small school. Real numbers from the stocking calculator, not the inch rule.

A 10 gallon tank holds about 9 neon tetras, 18 ember tetras or 7 guppies on their own, or a betta with a small school of six. Those are the largest groups our stocking calculator still rates as comfortable in 10 gallons, and a two-species community of small fish usually lands at 10 to 14 fish in total. A 10 is a real aquarium, but it is a small one: it has room for one idea, done properly, rather than a little of everything.
Every number below is the calculator's own output for a 10 gallon tank. Put the same fish into the tool and you will get the same percentage.
How many fish in a 10 gallon tank, by species
The table gives the largest single-species group that stays at or under 85% of capacity, the line between comfortable and full. Only species whose minimum tank size is 10 gallons or less are listed; the 20 gallon column shows how much room the next standard size adds.
| Species | Adult size | Waste | In 10 gal | In 20 gal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ember Tetra | 0.8" | low | up to 18 | up to 36 |
| Neon Tetra | 1.5" | low | up to 9 | up to 19 |
| Glowlight Tetra | 1.5" | low | up to 9 | up to 19 |
| Harlequin Rasbora | 2" | low | up to 7 | up to 14 |
| Zebra Danio | 2" | low | up to 7 | up to 14 |
| Guppy | 2" | low | up to 7 | up to 14 |
| Southern Platy | 2.5" | low | up to 5 | up to 11 |
| Betta (Siamese Fighting Fish) | 2.5" | low | up to 5 | up to 11 |
The betta row is a ceiling from waste alone, not advice: bettas are kept one to a tank because males fight. Platies top out at 5 because they are deeper-bodied than a tetra, and zebra danios are fast swimmers that use every inch of a 10 gallon's 20 inch length, so treat their number as the most you would want, not a target.
Why it is not 10 inches of fish
The one inch per gallon rule would allow 10 inches of fish here, which is five guppies, or one 10 inch fish that would not fit in the tank. It fails because the thing a small tank runs out of is the capacity to process waste, and waste does not scale with length. The calculator keeps adult length as the measure of how much fish you add, then weights each inch by the species' waste output (×1 low, ×1.7 medium, ×4 heavy). A 10 gallon supplies 1.7 units per gallon, 17 in total, and comfortable ends at 14.5.
In those units an ember tetra costs 0.8, a neon 1.5, a guppy 2 and a platy 2.5. A molly costs 6.8 and a fancy goldfish 32, which is why a single goldfish uses the whole tank. The full argument is in why the inch rule fails, and the chemistry is in what bioload is.

Five 10 gallon stocking plans, run through the calculator
| Plan | Stock list | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Betta and a nano school | 1 betta and 6 ember tetras | 43% understocked |
| Neon school | 8 neon tetras | 71% ok |
| Male guppy tank | 5 male guppies | 59% ok |
| Two small schools | 6 ember tetras and 6 neon tetras | 81% ok |
| Platy trio | 3 platies and 6 ember tetras | 72% ok |
Betta and a nano school. The most popular 10 gallon there is, and a good one. At 43% there is room to take the embers to 8 (52%), but the spare capacity is better spent on plants, which give the betta places to patrol and the embers places to hide. A betta wants a heater at 78 to 80°F and a gentle filter; the ember tetras are happy at the same temperature.
Neon school. Eight neon tetras read 71%, a full-looking school in a tank this size, with a margin for a missed water change. Ten read 88%: it works, but the tank is full from the day the last fish goes in.
Male guppy tank. Five guppies read 59%. Males only is the point: they carry the colour, and they cannot breed. Adding 6 neons to the five males pushes it to 112%, so it is one or the other in a 10.
Two small schools. Embers and neons swim at slightly different levels and read 81% together, which is about as much community as a 10 gallon takes. Add a few cherry shrimp or nerite snails for clean-up; their waste is too small to move the number.
Platy trio. Three platies with 6 embers read 72%. Platies are livebearers like guppies, so keep one sex or plan for the fry, which will push this plan over the line within a few months.
What does not belong in a 10 gallon
- Corydoras. Six standard corydoras read 88% by waste, already full, and the calculator flags the tank as too small: they want 20 gallons and a long floor to forage across. Pygmy corydoras are the exception people keep in 10s; the standard bronze and albino types are not.
- Mollies. Three mollies read 120% and are flagged for a 20 gallon minimum.
- Goldfish. One fancy goldfish reads 188%. Pet shops sell them with 10 gallon kits; it is the most common stocking mistake there is.
- Cherry barbs and angelfish. Six cherry barbs read 71% and want 15 gallons; one angelfish reads 60% and wants 30 gallons and the height to match.
10 gallon versus 20 gallon
A 10 gallon is 20 × 10 × 12 inches and holds 37.9 liters. The same 8 neons that read 71% here read 35% in a 20 gallon, and 141% in a 5 gallon, which is why a 5 is a betta tank and nothing else. The 20 long (30 × 12 inches) is the smallest size where a bottom group of corydoras and a midwater school both fit, and it is twice as forgiving of a missed water change, because the same amount of waste lands in twice the water. If you are buying new and have the space, the 20 long costs little more and opens up most of the species this page rules out.
Weight is rarely the problem with a 10. Aqueon lists its 10 gallon at 11 lb empty and 111 lb full, about 75 lb per square foot on its footprint; the aquarium weight statistics compare it with 28 other sizes. The 10 gallon tank page has the real inside dimensions and the gap between the nominal and geometric volume.
How to stock a 10 gallon tank
- Cycle it first. A small tank has the least margin for ammonia. Fishless cycling takes two to six weeks.
- Add fish in two or three batches, a week or two apart, so the bacteria catch up with the load.
- Run your real list through the calculator; it flags any fish below its minimum tank or group size whatever the percentage says.
- Change 25 to 30% of the water weekly. In 10 gallons that is a bucket, and it is what keeps nitrate down in a tank this size.

Frequently asked questions
How many fish can you put in a 10 gallon tank?
About 9 neon-sized fish on their own, 18 ember tetras, or 7 guppies, before the stocking calculator moves from comfortable to full. A mixed tank of two small species usually lands at 10 to 14 fish: 6 embers plus 6 neons reads 81%.
How many neon tetras can go in a 10 gallon tank?
Up to 9 on their own. Eight read 71% and ten read 88%, which is full. Keep at least 6, because neons are a schooling fish and a group of two or three hides and stresses.
How many guppies can live in a 10 gallon tank?
Up to 7 adults stay comfortable. Keep males only in a 10 gallon: a mixed group breeds every month, and six adults (71%) become thirty fish by summer.
Can a betta live with other fish in a 10 gallon?
Often, with care. A betta and 6 ember tetras reads 43%, lightly stocked, and embers are small and dull enough that most bettas ignore them. Some bettas will not tolerate any company; have a second tank or a divider ready.
Can I put corydoras or a goldfish in a 10 gallon tank?
The calculator says no to both. Standard corydoras want 20 gallons and a group of six; 6 read 88% by waste, already full, and the tank is too short for them to forage. One fancy goldfish reads 188% and needs 30 gallons or more.
How many liters is a 10 gallon tank?
37.9 liters. A standard 10 gallon measures 20 × 10 × 12 inches, and Aqueon lists its 10 gallon at 11 lb empty and 111 lb full, so a sturdy table or a proper stand is enough.
