How the Ragdoll ages
The Ragdoll weighs about 10β20 lb and typically lives 12β17 years. Like all cats, it ages fast early: about 15 human years by age one and 24 by age two, then roughly four human years for every calendar year after that. A 5-year-old is around 36 in human years, and a 12-year-old about 64. This feline curve reflects how cats really age, unlike the flat "multiply by seven" rule that overstates a kitten's age and understates a senior cat's.
How long do Ragdolls live?
A Ragdoll typically lives 12 to 17 years. On the feline curve that is 64 to 84 in human years. Vets count a cat as senior from about age 10, so a Ragdoll that reaches a typical lifespan spends 2 to 7 years as a senior, which is when twice-yearly checkups start to earn their cost.
The Ragdoll is a large, semi-longhaired cat known for going limp when picked up. Like the Maine Coon it matures slowly, reaching full size around four, and its relaxed temperament means it is more likely to gain weight than to burn it off.
Ragdoll life stages, year by year
Life stages follow the AAHA/AAFP feline life stage guidelines: kitten to 1, young adult 1 to 6, mature adult 7 to 10, senior from 10. The rows run to the top of the Ragdoll's usual lifespan. A Ragdoll reaches its full adult size at about 4 years.
| Ragdoll age | Human years | Life stage |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 15 | Young adult |
| 2 | 24 | Young adult |
| 3 | 28 | Young adult |
| 4 | 32 | Young adult |
| 6 | 40 | Young adult |
| 8 | 48 | Mature adult |
| 10 | 56 | Senior |
| 12 | 64 | Senior |
| 14 | 72 | Senior |
| 16 | 80 | Senior |
What shapes a Ragdoll's senior years
Breed does not change how fast a cat ages, but it does change what tends to go wrong on the way. These are the conditions with a recognised link to the Ragdoll:
- Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM): a Ragdoll-specific MYBPC3 mutation (R820W) has a DNA test; screening by echocardiogram is still advised.
- Bladder stones: calcium oxalate stones and other lower urinary tract problems are reported more often in the breed.
- Obesity: a big, laid-back cat that rarely self-regulates its food.
How much a Ragdoll eats
Daily calories across the breed's adult weight range (10β20 lb), from the resting energy formula (70 Γ kg0.75) times the feline life-stage factor. Cups assume a 400 kcal/cup dry food. Ragdolls are big cats, so their calorie figures look generous, but most are less active than their size suggests. Keep them lean and encourage water intake, which also helps with the urinary issues the breed is prone to.
| Weight | Neutered adult | Intact adult | Senior | Cups/day |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 lb | 261 kcal | 305 kcal | 250 kcal | 0.65 |
| 15 lb | 354 kcal | 413 kcal | 339 kcal | 0.89 |
| 20 lb | 439 kcal | 512 kcal | 421 kcal | 1.1 |
