How the Siamese ages
The Siamese weighs about 8β15 lb and typically lives 12β20 years. Like all cats, it ages fast early: about 15 human years by age one and 24 by age two, then roughly four human years for every calendar year after that. A 5-year-old is around 36 in human years, and a 12-year-old about 64. This feline curve reflects how cats really age, unlike the flat "multiply by seven" rule that overstates a kitten's age and understates a senior cat's.
How long do Siamese cats live?
A Siamese typically lives 12 to 20 years. On the feline curve that is 64 to 96 in human years. Vets count a cat as senior from about age 10, so a Siamese that reaches a typical lifespan spends 2 to 10 years as a senior, which is when twice-yearly checkups start to earn their cost.
The Siamese is slender, vocal and intensely social, and it is one of the longest-lived breeds, with many reaching their late teens. That length of life is why its senior years deserve as much planning as its kittenhood.
Siamese life stages, year by year
Life stages follow the AAHA/AAFP feline life stage guidelines: kitten to 1, young adult 1 to 6, mature adult 7 to 10, senior from 10. The rows run to the top of the Siamese's usual lifespan. A Siamese reaches its full adult size at about 1 year.
| Siamese age | Human years | Life stage |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 15 | Young adult |
| 2 | 24 | Young adult |
| 3 | 28 | Young adult |
| 4 | 32 | Young adult |
| 6 | 40 | Young adult |
| 8 | 48 | Mature adult |
| 10 | 56 | Senior |
| 12 | 64 | Senior |
| 14 | 72 | Senior |
| 16 | 80 | Senior |
| 18 | 88 | Senior |
| 20 | 96 | Senior |
What shapes a Siamese's senior years
Breed does not change how fast a cat ages, but it does change what tends to go wrong on the way. These are the conditions with a recognised link to the Siamese:
- Amyloidosis: amyloid deposits in the liver are documented in Siamese and Oriental lines.
- Asthma: bronchial disease is reported more often in Siamese than in most breeds.
- Progressive retinal atrophy (rdAc): the same vision-loss mutation found in Abyssinians, with a DNA test.
- Dental disease: common enough to make regular dental checks worthwhile.
How much a Siamese eats
Daily calories across the breed's adult weight range (8β15 lb), from the resting energy formula (70 Γ kg0.75) times the feline life-stage factor. Cups assume a 400 kcal/cup dry food. A naturally lean, active breed that often needs the upper end of the neutered range. Weight loss in an older Siamese is more often a warning sign (thyroid, kidneys, teeth) than a success.
| Weight | Neutered adult | Intact adult | Senior | Cups/day |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8 lb | 221 kcal | 258 kcal | 212 kcal | 0.55 |
| 11.5 lb | 290 kcal | 338 kcal | 278 kcal | 0.73 |
| 15 lb | 354 kcal | 413 kcal | 339 kcal | 0.89 |
