What shapes a Burmese's senior years
Breed does not change how fast a cat ages, but it does change what tends to go wrong on the way. These are the conditions with a recognised link to the Burmese:
- Diabetes mellitus: Burmese cats have a markedly higher rate of diabetes than other breeds in studies from the UK, Australia and New Zealand, which makes keeping them lean a priority.
- Hypokalaemic polymyopathy: low blood potassium causing episodic muscle weakness, often a dipped head; a DNA test exists.
- Feline orofacial pain syndrome: a painful condition that leads to pawing at the mouth, reported most often in Burmese.

Daily calories across the breed's adult weight range (6β12 lb), from the resting energy formula (70 Γ kg0.75) times the feline life-stage factor. Cups assume a 400 kcal/cup dry food. Given the diabetes risk, this is the breed where portion control pays off most.
