How the Persian ages

The Persian weighs about 7–12 lb and typically lives 10–17 years. Like all cats, it ages fast early: about 15 human years by age one and 24 by age two, then roughly four human years for every calendar year after that. A 5-year-old is around 36 in human years, and a 12-year-old about 64. This feline curve reflects how cats really age, unlike the flat "multiply by seven" rule that overstates a kitten's age and understates a senior cat's.

How long do Persians live?

A Persian typically lives 10 to 17 years. On the feline curve that is 56 to 84 in human years. Vets count a cat as senior from about age 10, so a Persian that reaches a typical lifespan spends 0 to 7 years as a senior, which is when twice-yearly checkups start to earn their cost.

The Persian is a long-coated, flat-faced, famously placid cat. It needs daily grooming and a calm household, and its lifespan range (10 to 17 years) is one of the widest here, largely because of how much its inherited conditions vary from line to line.

Persian life stages, year by year

Life stages follow the AAHA/AAFP feline life stage guidelines: kitten to 1, young adult 1 to 6, mature adult 7 to 10, senior from 10. The rows run to the top of the Persian's usual lifespan. A Persian reaches its full adult size at about 2 years.

What shapes a Persian's senior years

Breed does not change how fast a cat ages, but it does change what tends to go wrong on the way. These are the conditions with a recognised link to the Persian:

  • Polycystic kidney disease (PKD): historically very common in Persians; the PKD1 DNA test lets breeders avoid it, so ask for results.
  • Brachycephalic airway and eyes: flat-faced conformation brings breathing difficulty, tear overflow and eyelid problems.
  • Dental disease: crowded teeth in a short jaw make dental care a lifelong job.

How much a Persian eats

Daily calories across the breed's adult weight range (7–12 lb), from the resting energy formula (70 Γ— kg0.75) times the feline life-stage factor. Cups assume a 400 kcal/cup dry food. A sedentary breed: the neutered-adult figure is usually enough and often slightly too much. Kidney disease risk is one more reason to keep fresh water easy to reach and to discuss wet food with the vet as the cat ages.

How many calories does a Persian need?

A neutered adult Persian needs about 200 kcal a day at 7 lb and 299 kcal at 12 lb, or 0.5 to 0.75 cups of a 400 kcal/cup dry food. A sedentary breed: the neutered-adult figure is usually enough and often slightly too much.
