How the Maine Coon ages

The Maine Coon weighs about 10–25 lb and typically lives 12–15 years. Like all cats, it ages fast early: about 15 human years by age one and 24 by age two, then roughly four human years for every calendar year after that. A 5-year-old is around 36 in human years, and a 12-year-old about 64. This feline curve reflects how cats really age, unlike the flat "multiply by seven" rule that overstates a kitten's age and understates a senior cat's.

How long do Maine Coons live?

A Maine Coon typically lives 12 to 15 years. On the feline curve that is 64 to 76 in human years. Vets count a cat as senior from about age 10, so a Maine Coon that reaches a typical lifespan spends 2 to 5 years as a senior, which is when twice-yearly checkups start to earn their cost.

The Maine Coon is the largest common domestic breed and the slowest to finish growing: many keep filling out until four or five. Its age in human years follows the same feline curve as any cat, but its body is still maturing well into what the curve calls young adulthood.

Maine Coon life stages, year by year

Life stages follow the AAHA/AAFP feline life stage guidelines: kitten to 1, young adult 1 to 6, mature adult 7 to 10, senior from 10. The rows run to the top of the Maine Coon's usual lifespan. A Maine Coon reaches its full adult size at 3 to 5 years.

What shapes a Maine Coon's senior years

Breed does not change how fast a cat ages, but it does change what tends to go wrong on the way. These are the conditions with a recognised link to the Maine Coon:

  • Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM): a Maine Coon-specific MYBPC3 mutation is linked to the disease and has a DNA test; echocardiogram screening is still recommended.
  • Hip dysplasia: far more common than in most cats, partly because of the breed's size.
  • Spinal muscular atrophy: an inherited neuromuscular disease with a DNA test.

How much a Maine Coon eats

Daily calories across the breed's adult weight range (10–25 lb), from the resting energy formula (70 Γ— kg0.75) times the feline life-stage factor. Cups assume a 400 kcal/cup dry food. The breed's 10 to 25 lb range covers small females to big males, and 25 lb describes a large male at a healthy weight, not a target. Feed a growing Maine Coon on kitten food for longer than other breeds, then recalculate for adult needs once it has stopped growing.
